Health Disparities

Health disparities and inequities are well-documented gaps that interfere with positive health outcomes amongst marginalized communities. Health disparities have show to be attributed to factors relating to social determinants of health that are grouped into 5 domains: economic stability, education access and quality, healthcare access and quality, neighborhoold and build environment, and social and community context. Research shows African-American and Latino populations are less likely to receive physical therapy services and orthopedic surgical interventions compared to Caucasians.

The Austin Movement Project is utilizing the social determinants of health conceptual framework to identify problems and implement evidence-based interventions to improve health outcomes and promote equitable resources for vulnerable populations.
